EU Ink Cartridge Policy Change: Favoring Remanufactured Cartridges
>> Tuesday, December 1, 2009
One of the recently posted news at Goggle is on the European Parliament changing its policy on the use of ink cartridges. The changes have been made after a British ink and toner cartridge remanufacturing group lobbied the use of remanufactured cartridges.
The article further revealed that the European Parliament buys more than 10,000 ink and toner cartridges every year. This figure is small compared to those of other countries but it is still quite alarming. Think of it as more than 10,000 cartridges adding up to the piles of junk. This is definitely not environment-friendly. I totally understand why Kleenstrike, the company that pushed for the change in the policy and the UK Association of Toner and Ink Cartridge Manufacturers have lobbied for this. More junk could mean more harm not only to the environment but also to the people.
Well, in this case, the European Parliament has a lot to learn from the United States. In the United States, companies have started using printer remanufactured cartridges to coincide with their go green campaigns. Remanufactured cartridges, as the name implies, are printer ink cartridges that are re-used and refilled. Old cartridges are collected, disassembled and cleaned so they can be refilled with toner (for laser printers) and liquid ink (for inkjet printers) for redistribution to consumers.
More and more people prefer buying remanufactured cartridges because these are 30 to 40% cheaper and are more environment-friendly. With every remanufactured cartridge you buy means one less new cartridge to produce. You also contribute to the growing waste piles that can harm our natural resources.
