Toner/Ink Cartridge Life Cycle

>> Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Indeed the recent global economic crisis have taught people a valuable lesson: becoming wise consumers and spenders. In a recent report on toner and ink cartidge sales, it was concluded that the crisis has driven people to opt for compatible or remanufactured toners and inks over OEM printer supplies. With the growing popularity of compatible and remanufactured toners and inks, one wonders: how many times can a cartridge be refilled and reused?

Based on online sources, a toner or an ink cartridge is good for at least ten cycles, meaning, it can also be refilled at least ten times. Actually, the re-usability of a cartridge depends on how you handle your cartridge. For example, some cartridges are only good for one cycle due to mishandling while some may last more than ten cycles. For as long as the cartridge is intact and fit for use, then it can still be refilled.

A toner or ink cartridge's “life span” also depends on the type of cartridge that you have. There are cartridges with built-in printheads. This can be refilled ten to fifteen times or more if given proper care. Cartridges that do not have printheads can, theoretically, be refilled infinitely. There is no theoretical life span for a cartridge without a printhead. It can be used and re-used for as long as the cartridge is in good condition and does not have any dent or leaks. Also, a cartridge that does not have a printhead is no longer fit for re-use if the content (ink or toner) is allowed to dry out.

There are simple things you can do to prolong the life of your toner or ink cartridges. Click here to view our previous blog on how to maintain cartridges.
